Arnold has been a default renderer plugin in maya since 2016. We can use it for many purpose in game asset creation.


  • Arnold’s material aiambient occlusion can help you render AO to texture using a normal map
  • Only Arnold 1.4.2 (no over 2.0) can render AO to texture using transparency.


  • In order to render alpha, you need a camera (you can use LD_MayaToolbox, or write one to create a camera exactly the size of the plane). You can definitely bake alpha using maya transfer map function or xnormal, but you’ll get 2bit alpha with no anti-aliasing.


  • In hair workflow, you can use it to render hair texture.
